THE SRSG AND HEAD OF UNOCA IN NEW YORK
The Head of UNOCA, Mr. Abou Moussa, left Libreville last night as planned for New York, where he will participate to the Meeting of the Security Council. On November 14, he will present the first Report of the Secretary-General of the UN on UNOCA’s activities.
UNOCA PARTICIPATES TO AN ASSESMENT MISSION ON MARITIME PIRACY
The United Nations Regional Office for Central Africa (UNOCA) takes part in an assessment Mission on piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, from November 7 to 19. The Mission was decided by the Secretary-General of the UN, following a request of the Head of State of Benin, Boni Yayi, whose country is affected by negative consequences of this cross-cutting phenomenon.
The mission is led by the Department of Political Affairs of the UN. Apart from Benin, it will visit Nigeria, Gabon and Angola where, respectively, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and the Commission of the Gulf of Guinea are located.
Mr. Anatole Ayissi, Chief of Staff, represents UNOCA in the Mission. He will join the Mission tomorrow, Wednesday 9 November.
THE SRSG IN BANGUI
The Head of UNOCA, Mr. Abou Moussa, and his Chief of Staff, Mr. Anatole Ayissi, were in Bangui (Central African Republic) from 6 to 7 November, for an official Mission. They returned in Libreville on Monday at around 02.25 PM, aboard an UN special flight.
During their stay, they met with relevant authorities to take stock of preparations of the 33rd Ministerial Meeting of the Standing Advisory Committee of the United Nations for security issues in Central Africa (UNSAC). This meeting is scheduled to take place in Bangui from 5 to 9 December 2011.
The Secretariat of UNSAC was entrusted to UNOCA in May 2011. The Head of the UNOCA will be traveling Tuesday, November 8 to New York, where he will participate to the Meeting of the Security Council of the United Nations. The first Report on activities of UNOCA will be presented during this session, less than one year after its inception on 1st January and its official inauguration (2 March 2011).
THE SRSG RETURNS BACK FROM SAO TOME
The Special Representative of Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Regional Office for Central Africa `(UNOCA), Mr. Abou Moussa, came back to Libreville, on Tuesday 1st November after three days in Sao Tome, the capital of Sao Tome and Principe. Meetings with national authorities allowed him to recall to the mandate of UNOCA and to note their concerns on security and peace issues in the region.
On Monday November 31, he met the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Communities, Mr. Salvador Ramos as well as his colleagues of Defence and Public Security, Mr. Carlos Olimpio Stock, and of Justice and Reform of the State, Mr. Alva Elisio Teixeira. The same day, he also discussed with Mr. Sylvester Leita da Fonseca, President of the Supreme Court.
Thereafter, the Head of the UNOCA had a warm and friendly working session with the staff of the five agencies of the UN system based in Sao Tome and Principe (UNICEF, UNDP, WFP, UNFPA, WHO). These agencies have played an important role in the success of his stay, which ended Tuesday 1st November with a meeting with diplomats at the UN Headquarter and with the Head of State Manuel Pinto da Costa at the Presidency.
THE SRSG VISITS SAO TOME & PRINCIPE
The Special Representative of the Secretary-general of the UN and Head of the United Nations Regional Office for Central Africa (UNOCA), will be in Sao Tome and Principe for an official visit from October 30 to November 1, 2011. During this visit, he will discuss the challenges faced by the Central Africa in terms of conflict prevention and peace building in the sub-region.
Discussions with the authorities will also allow Mr. Abou Moussa to take into account potential Government`s expectations and explore the ways and means for a dynamic cooperation. He will also hold working sessions with the diplomatic corps, the civil society, the United Nations colleagues, etc...
He will be accompanied by James Aji, Political Affairs Officer and Norbert N. Ouendji, Public Information Officer.
The delegation will leave Sao Tome November 1 for Bangui (Central African Republic), where Mr. Abou Moussa will take stock of the preparation of the 33rd meeting of the United Nations Standing Advisory Committee on Security Questions in Central Africa (UNSAC) with the competent authorities. This 33rd Meeting is supposed to take place in December.
This Wednesday, October 26, the Special Representative of the UNSG and Head of the UNOCA will have a briefing with the diplomatic corps in Gabon. He will provide the ambassadors with useful information on the activities of the Office and, in particular, on the key results of the seminar held from 10 to 11 October 2011.
Yesterday, the SRSG and Head of the UNOCA received in audience, the ambassador of Italy in Gabon, M. Umberto Malnati. The latter met M. Abou Moussa for a courtesy visit.
