Mr. Souef received by H.E. Ms. Ilza Maria dos Santos Amado Vaz, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Communities

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Central Africa and Head of UNOCA, Mohamed El-Amine Souef, is on an official visit to São Tomé and Príncipe from 11 to 16 July 2026 as part of his introductory tour of the 11 countries covered by UNOCA.

The visit comes shortly after Mr. Souef assumed his duties on 30 June and coincides with celebrations marking the 51st anniversary of the country’s independence. It also provides an opportunity to engage with national authorities and key stakeholders, reaffirming the strong partnership between the United Nations and São Tomé and Príncipe.

On his first day in the country, Mr. Souef was received by H.E. Ms. Ilza Maria dos Santos Amado Vaz, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Communities. He commended the Government and people of São Tomé and Príncipe for the progress achieved in recent years, particularly in justice and security sector reform.

This visit also takes place at an important moment in the country’s democratic life, as São Tomé and Príncipe prepares for its upcoming presidential election. In this regard, the United Nations reiterates its support for efforts aimed at ensuring a free, inclusive, transparent, and peaceful electoral process, in full respect of the sovereign will of the Santomean people.

The United Nations remains committed to supporting São Tomé and Príncipe in advancing sustainable development, good governance, social cohesion and prosperity for all.
