Chad: A call to support an inclusive and peaceful return to constitutional order

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Regional Office for Central Africa (UNOCA), Abdou Abarry, took part, on 18 September 2023, in New York, in a high-level meeting on the challenges and perspectives of the political transition in Chad. The event, which took place on the sidelines of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, was an opportunity to “promote an inclusive and peaceful return to constitutional order and the establishment of conditions for lasting peace” in this country. In this perspective, an appeal was launched to the international community to increase “support to efforts already deployed by the Chadian authorities.” In a Declaration published at the end of the discussions, partners were invited to “strengthen their support for elections, DDR [Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration], demining, prevention of hate speech, strengthening of the judicial system, empowerment of women and youth, sustainable development, actions to support community resilience and peacebuilding,” among others.

The high-level meeting was co-chaired by the Transitional Government of Chad, represented by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (Ambassador Mahamat Saleh Annadif), the Department of Political Affairs and Peacebuilding (DPPA) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Participants praised the work of the United Nations country team in favor of Chad, under the leadership of the Resident Coordinator, Violet Kakyomya. They also welcomed efforts of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNOCA, Abdou Abarry, who works in close collaboration with the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), the African Union and other partners.
