SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE, HEAD OF THE UNITED NATIONS REGIONAL OFFICE FOR CENTRAL AFRICA (UNOCA) HELDS DISCUSSIONS AT THE AFRICAN UNION HEADQUARTERS (ADDIS ABABA)

UNOCA/Libreville, August 23, 2011.... Arrived in Addis Ababa Monday, August 22, as part of a mission of consultation with various political leaders, Mr. Abou Moussa, the Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Regional Office for Central Africa began his day with meeting with officials of the Delegate of the European Union to the African Union.

Mr. Abou Moussa, subsequently met with officials of the headquarters of the African Union, including Ambassador Ramtane Lamamra, Commissioner for Peace and Security, Mr. El Ghass Wane, Director of the Peace and security and Mr. Sivuyile Bam, Head of Political Affairs and Military Logistics.

Mr. Abou Moussa seized that opportunity to introduce the institution he leads, notably its mandate, priority areas and responsibilities, including the coordination of actions of the United Nations system in countries affected by the consequences of repeated actions of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA).
In response, his interlocutors presented the results of two previous African Union Ministerial Meetings, held in Bangui from 13 to 14 October 2010 and 6 to 8 June 2011 in Addis Ababa, as well as ongoing efforts for the implementation of the recommendations of these meetings, as part of the fight against the LRA.
With Mr. Ramtane Lamamra particularly, in addition to the thorny problem of the LRA, the discussions focused more on issues of peace and security on the African continent in general and in the region of Central Africa in particular. The two men also discussed issues relating to border security, (notably the concern related from the mobility of nomadic Bororos), as well as that of the regional integrated approach in the search for peace and security. They have not forgotten to review the situation of the United Nations Standing Advisory Committee on Security Questions in Central Africa (UNSAC).

This series of talks continued in the afternoon when Mr. Abou Moussa met with representatives of the Delegation of the European Union to the African Union. All the major areas of cooperation between the Delegation of the European Union and the African Union were reviewed.

Mr. Abou Moussa expressed his desire to strengthen the existing relations of cooperation in order to achieve a better track record on all matters of common interest, especially that of the LRA.

Talks are to continue tomorrow, Wednesday, August 24, 2011.
